The saying goes that on every block in the Midwest there’s one bar and one church. If you tie one on too tight, you don’t have far to go to find a place that’s supposed to forgive you for all your sinning. Ladybird’s songs live somewhere on that block. Somewhere on the long cold walk between the high times at the tavern with your friends, and the shadow of the steeple that reminds you of tomorrow’s responsibilities and yesterday’s mistakes. The better you really ought to settle up and start the long walk home, but it’s warm inside and the tab’s still open…

The band’s second full-length album, Clementine, is due on October 10, with the next single, “Famous Band,” out now.

Born out of the idea that saying or believing something enough can will it into existence, the song showcases the band’s commitment to good times–manifesting a future where their hard work finds them hanging out with George Strait, Willie Nelson, and Nickelback, to name a few.

Ladybird’s songs have a sense of casual comfort to them. Everyone you’ve ever met is inside these songs. The names and the places may be specific to the songwriter, but there’s a universal connectivity that a new listener might still understand. The names and the places change, but the feeling that they evoke is familiar. What stands out in the cannon of these songs is the kindness to the characters. There’s a forgiveness and a grace that comes from a place of experience. It’s the same grace granted with the silent smile from a grandparent or an uncle when you’re trying to convince them you’ve got it all figured out. Only they know that you don’t, and only they know how tough it gets when you figure that out too. But you know they’ll be there for you the next time you think you’ve got it figure out. Ladybird’s characters are on that same lifelong journey– of thinking you’ve got it together and inevitably finding out you’re wrong.

The band’s been busting their butt since 2021. Always done on their own accord and on their own dime. They’ve toured the country and played some good shows and some really not good shows. They’ve connected with their hometown in such a way that they’ve played some of the city’s most historic and treasured venues. As the band has evolved, the goals have stayed the same– make good records that you can be proud of and that would make the place you come from proud, get in the van and play those songs to as many people who will listen, and remain grateful for the opportunity.

Ladybird’s universe is a family affair. But the drunken backyard extended family reunion type of family affair. The drinks are cold and everyone’s got a story to tell. Pull up a chair and listen in.
