This Friday marks the launch of two titles from stalwart Montréal distributor, DAME on two of their flagship labels.
First, from Collection QB, the in-house imprint of Quatuor Bozzini comes a reissue of a pivotal 2006 outing, Jürg Frey — String Quartets, which originally appeared on Editions Wandelweiser Records. This crucial re-print comes after their acclaimed 2024 recording of Frey’s fourth quartet and rounds up the Swiss composer’s first two quartets and other works. Frey’s 29-minute Streichquartett 2 alone is widely considered a contemporary masterpiece, unfurling a long procession of sonorities that hover on the brink of inaudibility and the remainder of the album also reveals further delicate investigations at the convergence of pure sound and traditional conceptions of melody and harmony.

Also due out this Friday is Nour Symon‘s je suis calme et enragé•e from Ambiances Magnétiques, an engrossing work scored for four voices (Zéa Beaulieu-April, Gabriel Dharmoo, Laura Doyle Péan, Vincent Ranallo), and Ensemble SuperMusique plus guest performers (Émilie Mouchous — synthesizers, Benjamin Tremblay-Carpentier— harmonicas, electronics). Drawing inspiration from on the Printemps Érable protests of 2012, the work employs poetry by Roxane Desjardins alongside Nour Symon’s lavish graphic scores. The result is beautifully tense, visceral music that is as tumultuous as it is subtle, as curiously textural as it is forthrightly gestural.
