Long-running Montréal imprint and epicentre of the vibrant musique actuelle scene, Ambiances Magnétiques is gearing up to release two new titles on December 5th. Hugo Blouin‘s eccentric Le buffet is culinary-themed odyssey through ten exuberant and angular jazz compositions featuring an all-star band, while hORs TempS presents the collagist collaboration between Géraldine Eguilluz and Michel F Côté,drawing on 30+ year-old recordings from the former that the pair has processed and extemporized upon.
Le buffet follows Blouin’s other outings blending the conceptual and playful within agile, proggish jazz pieces.Heenlists revered drummer John Hollenbeck, vocalist Eugénie Jobin Tremblay (AKA Ambroise), Aurélien Tomasi on winds, pianist Marianne Trudel as well as the following esteemed guests: Alissa Cheung (of Quatuor Bozzini) on violin, Émilie Fortin (trumpet), backing vocalists Sylvaine Arnaud and Charlotte Layec, as well as Marion Rampal who takes the vocal lead on one cut. The music uses actual recipes collected from his friends as well as interviews with them adding a personal dimension to the album.
hORs TempS sees Géraldine Eguiluz and Michel F Côté brewing a potent concoction of different elements—acoustic and electronic instrumentation brush up against repurposed sounds and atmospheric treatments, while spirituality, ancestry, and memory intertwine. It’s not an easy release to pin down, and that’s its strength. It’s fragmentary, pluralistic journey that traverses several different worlds but keeps the listener rapt as it navigates its circuitous path.
