Understory Records is shedding light on the music being made in the undergrowth.
Smithers, BC – Understory Records, a new independent record label based out of Smithers, is launching on February 28th 2026. Understory Records is a partnership between journalist Pamela Haasen and musician Naomi Kavka. With their combined media and business experience, they are forming a company to provide a service to local and regional artists to produce and distribute vinyl records. This service makes it easy to “shop local” for music, and support your local artists instead of turning to increasingly exploitative streaming services.
“Understory Records is a boutique record label based on the unceded and traditional Yintah of the Witsuwit’en Nation and Gidemt’en Clan in Smithers, British Columbia. Our mandate is to support artists in Northern or otherwise underserved communities by sharing their music with audiences across Canada and the world. Great music grows everywhere, but sometimes it takes a little foraging to find it. Think of us as your wholesome local market for 100% Northern talent. Ethically produced, locally grown, and vibrantly diverse.”
The label’s first release, Understory Records Volume One is also being released on February 28th. This is a limited edition 12” vinyl compilation of Northern BC and Yukon artists including Elijah Quinn, Scouts Honour, EARTHXSTAR, Jordy Walker, Highbush Caribou, and more.
A celebration will be held at Smithers Brewing Company Saturday February 28th at 8pm. The event will feature artists Wedgwood, Urchin, and Naomi Kavka. Records will be available at the event and online. Tickets are $20 in advance, available at Smithers Brewing.
